WHY DOES GOD HIDE HIMSELF

“How long wilt thou forget me, O Lord? Forever? How long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?”(Psalm 13:1-2)

God is real, no matter how or what you feel. It is easy to worship God when things are going good in our life when He has provided food, friends, family, health, and happy situations. But circumstances are not always pleasant. What do you do to worship God when this happens? What do you do when God seems to be a million miles away? The deepest level of worship is to praise God in spite of the pain, to thank him during times of trials, to trust in Him when you are tempted, to surrender to Him when you are suffering, and to love Him when He seems distant.

Friendships are often tested by separation and silence; when you are separated by physical distance or because you are not able to speak to each other. In your relationship with God, you will not always feel close to Him. Every relationship has its times of intimacy and times of separation and in a relationship with God, it does not matter how intimate it may be, the pendulum moves from one side to the other. It is here that worship is difficult.

To deepen your relationship, God tests you with periods of apparent separation, times when it feels as if He has abandoned you or has forgotten you. It feels as if He is a million miles away. These days of spiritual drought, doubt, and separation of God are referred to as "the dark night of the soul." Others call it "the winter of the heart".

David was probably the one that had the most intimate relationship with God without equal. God took pleasure in calling him "a man after mine own heart." Nevertheless, David frequently complained about the apparent absence of God. Of course, God had not actually abandon David and He will not leave you either. Repeatedly He has promised: “I will never leave you nor abandon you.” But God has not promised: “You will always feel my presence." In fact, God admits that sometimes He does hide His face from us. There are times in which it will seem as if He has disappeared completely from your life.

If you wake up one morning and all your spiritual feelings are gone, what are you going to do? You pray, but nothing happens. You rebuke the devil but that doesn’t change anything. You do your spiritual exercises, you ask your friends to pray for you, you confess all the sins that you can possibly imagine, and then you go and apologize to every person you know. You fast and even then, nothing happens. You begin to ask yourself, how long is this depression going to last. Days, weeks, months, when is it going to end? You feel as if your prayers simply bounce off the ceiling. In total desperation, you sob: “what’s happening to me?”

The truth is that there is nothing wrong with you! It is a normal part of the testing and of the deepening of your relationship with God. Every believer goes through this at least once in his life. It is painful and disconcerting, but it is absolutely vital for the development of your faith. To know this, gave Job hope when he could not feel the presence of God in his life. He said, “Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him: But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:8-10).

When God seems distant, it is possible that you feel that He is angry with you or that He is disciplining you for some sin. In fact, sin does disconnect us from intimate communion with God. But very often this feeling of abandonment or of God's separation has nothing in common with sin. It is a testing of faith, one that we all have to face. Are you going to keep on loving, trusting, obeying, and worshiping God, even if you do not perceive His presence or have visible evidence that He is acting in your life?

The most common error that people commit today in worshiping is that they look for an experience instead of looking for God. They look for a feeling, and if it happens they then conclude that they have worshiped. This is erroneous! In fact, God often removes our feelings so that we do not depend on them. To look for a feeling, even if it is to feel God's closeness, is not worship.

REJECTION

“For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. He is despised and rejected by men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” (Isaiah 53:2-3)

We have all experienced rejection in our lives at one time or another. Those times when, for no apparent reason, someone turned against us or made some thoughtless comment.

Some of life's most painful rejection comes from childhood experiences. Rejection suffered in our early years often sets the tone for a person's entire life. Whenever someone that we hold in esteem, such as a parent or close friend rejects us, feelings of being unloved, unworthy, useless, or insignificant can arise. God never intended for us to struggle with feelings of low self-esteem or rejection. Instead, He wants us to understand that we have value and worth not because of who we are in this world, but because He created us and we belong to Him. (Psalms 100:3).

Learning the correct way to respond to rejection is essential if we are to experience the joy and peace that God wants us to have in our lives.

In Genesis, God said: "… Let Us make man in Our image …" (Genesis 1:26). A basic truth in handling rejection is that you know that you were made in the image of God. Nothing can separate us from His love and care. People struggling with feelings of deep rejection find it hard to imagine how God can love them so easily. But, our worth is not based on a human scale. It is based on God's unconditional love.

When you accept His death on the cross as payment for your sins (John 3:16), you become a child of God. You are grafted into His family, and your life has eternal worth. (Romans 11:17). There is nothing you can do to become more worthy. And there is nothing anyone can say about you that will cancel God's love for you.

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF REJECTION IN OUR LIVES?

Unfortunately, we cannot shield ourselves from rejection. Rejection is only destructive when we internalize it and allow it to creep into our belief system. Satan loves to fuel the fires of low self-esteem with periodic forms of rejection, for example; a boss you can never please, a parent who only praises straight A's on your report card or a friend who ignores you at a party.

We cannot avoid rejection because we cannot control the way people feel about us. Some will like us automatically; others may reject us without reason. But, it is when we fail to accept ourselves, that rejection has an open door to our emotions.

The results are disastrous, a sense of unworthiness, a lack of self-acceptance, and an inability to build healthy relationships. We feel unworthy and we think others see us in the same way. If left unchecked, rejection will control our attitudes, actions, and even our relationship with God and others.

Manipulation and a desire to control others are key instruments of a person who feels rejected. Many times when a person rejects you, they want you to perform a certain way. By using rejection, they manipulate you until your actions line up with their desires.

The only way to combat rejection is to gain a strong understanding of your worth. Who you are, is not determined by those around you. Anytime you base your self-worth on what other people say about you, you set yourself up for rejection. You have to learn to like yourself and accept yourself for who you are. You are unique.

In his first epistle, Peter writes to a group of believers struggling with persecution and deep rejection. Trying to instill a sense of hope in those who will read his letter, Peter tells them of their value in the kingdom of God: I Peter 2:10 “Once you were nobody. Now you are God’s people. At one time no one had pity on you. Now God has treated you with kindness.”

WHAT ARE SOME FACTS THAT WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT REJECTION?

There are many characteristics that can help identify when a person is struggling with feelings of rejection. Rejection is a result of basic human needs not being met. For example, each of us has the basic need to be accepted. The following are some characteristics that are common in rejection.

1. Fear of opinions of others

2. Feelings of inferiority

3. Perfectionism

4. Suspicious of anything nice done for you

5. Difficulty in trusting God

6. Difficulty in trusting others

7. Severe depression and thoughts of suicide

8. Over-emphasis on material values

9. Self-verification — seeking proof of self-worth

10. Over-emphasis on dress and appearance

11. Anger

12. A critical spirit

13. Domineering appearance

14. Self-imposed isolation

WHAT CAUSES REJECTION?

There are many causes for rejection. A thoughtless, seemingly harmless word spoken by a parent can be perceived in such a way that we experience a lifetime of rejection. Obvious forms of rejection include mental, physical, and sexual.

Divorce is a leading cause of rejection. Many divorced people find it difficult to begin life over after a divorce. They struggle with feelings of failure and low self-esteem. A death or abandonment of a parent also leads to feelings of rejection. The guilt of past failures and the criticism of others are avenues of rejection. ¿What major events in your life have caused you to experience rejection?

We are the only ones who can stop the horrible effects of rejection. While God provides the spiritual tools, we must choose to use them. Anytime rejection gains a foothold in our lives, our self-esteem suffers. We find it hard to forgive ourselves and others. Instead, we hold grudges because someone said a thoughtless remark.

Feelings of resentfulness and bitterness from a lack of forgiveness only feed a poor self-image. Ask God to show you the people you need to forgive. They may have hurt you deeply; but by forgiving them, you are freeing yourself to receive God's forgiveness and restoration in your own life.

HOW CAN WE DEAL WITH REJECTION?

Dealing successfully with rejection requires honesty and a willingness to get to the root of the problem which is a poor view of our self-worth. We can never base our worth as a person on the opinion of others. If we do, we are sure to suffer disappointment and rejection.

Only God can meet all your needs. He is you're all in all in every situation. You belong to Him. You hold a special place in His heart; He loves you and cares for you.

Jesus knew that after His death there would be long, dark moments of confusion and persecution for His disciples. Therefore, He prepared a way for them to sense His presence forever. They never had to lose their sense of belonging because He sent His Spirit, the comforter, to them.

The word comforter in the New Testament means to come alongside another, to offer aid, to be a defense and an advocate. Jesus was this to His disciples. He left them and us with the eternal gift of His Spirit that we might know we are never alone. He tells us in Matthew 28:20: “I will be with you always.”

John 15:16 tells us that God has personally chosen you. Isaiah 49:16 says that your name is etched in the palms of His hands. He promises to be your strength your sufficiency and your redeemer.

We are capable to work, live, and enjoy life because of the power that is ours in Jesus Christ. The next time rejection comes:

1. Identify the source of the rejection and the accompanying feelings.

2. Reaffirm your position as to who you are. Tell God exactly what you are feeling. Know that He understands the heartache of rejection and He will use every trial to draw you closer to Him.

3. Recall the unchanging truth that you are unconditionally loved, accepted, and complete in Christ.

Jesus suffered the ultimate form of rejection. He was mock; spat on, threatened, and finally put to death. His entire life was a sacrificial offering of forgiveness, acceptance, and unconditional love. Yet everywhere He went, He faced rejection. But man's view of Him never altered His focus. It could never damage what He knew to be true. Victory over the world's rejection was His. He did not need the world's approval.

Always remember that God loves and cares for you. The victory is yours the minute you apply the truths of God's Word to your life. You don't need the approval of the world or its favor. All you will ever need has been provided for you through Jesus Christ. You can rest in His sufficiency and be content in knowing that His grace is forever yours.

As you draw closer to Him, He will change you and sand away those rough areas of your life. But He will never reject you. When you come to Him, you will find the joy and happiness that you are longing for. In Him, you can always be confident of His love and acceptance.

Usted pertenece a Él.

Juan 6:60-68

DO YOU WANT TO GIVE UP?

“Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?... From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” John 6:60-68

Life’s pilgrimage is far from easy. There are all sorts of sacrifices, stumbling blocks, and hardships that make our journey hard. There are times when our journey seems too difficult to endure; “I give up,” we want to say. The words of Christian faith for this circumstance are articulated in a dialogue between Jesus and his disciples centering upon the severe demands and difficulty of His teachings.

Some of his disciples expressed their feelings, “This teaching is too hard. Who can accept it?” Their grumbling had to do not only with His teachings but also with their frustration in handling life’s challenges in general. Knowing of their unrest, Jesus addressed His disciples by asking them simply, “Does this make you want to give up?” A number of them did give up. Jesus then asks, “And you, would you also like to leave?” There was a real pull in the direction of quitting. Who knows how many times His disciples had to deal with feelings of frustration? Giving up, was an enticing option.

To be able to understand better the context of this portion, we go to what the Lord said on another occasion; “Then Peter said to him, “We’ve given up everything to follow you. What will we get out of it?”Jesus replied, “I assure you that when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life. (Matthew 19:27-29). Peter said to the Lord; “We have left everything: what are we going to get?” I believe that this question is one that occupies all of us, every now and then.

It seems that we place more importance on what we are going to receive instead of the generosity and kindness of the Lord towards us. The question of the rewards and what we are going to receive seems to hinder us! The Lord answers them, “You’re going to help me judge the twelve tribes of Israel.” I believe that the Lord is saying: “Why are you presenting me with a bill?”  “Are you afraid of losing, or that you are not going to gain anything?” “Do you believe that after the journey I'm going to leave you with nothing?” Dear brother we should always remember and understand that what we do for the Lord is not in vain.

Our relation with God is not a question of accounting, what does the Lord owe us! He is much greater than this because there is no limit to His generosity and kindness. After everything, with what is the Lord going to reward us? With eternal life!

It was not in turning away, but in drawing closer to Jesus that the disciples found their footing once again. Peter answered Jesus’ question about quitting by saying: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” Aware that the issues were not solved nor simplified, Peter refused to withdraw and the others agreed. They maintained their allegiance to God.

HOLDING ON TO THE BONES OF THE PAST

“…I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark…” (Philippians 3:13-14)

During the war in Vietnam, a young Vietnamese woman was killed leaving behind her husband and her baby. The husband traveled far and wide looking for work because he needed to provide for himself and his child. Often he would leave the small child with neighbors. After one long trip, the man returned to find his village demolished and deserted. He began frantically searching through the rubble where his neighbor's house had been and found scattered about some small bones. He was sure that these were the remains of his son. He took the small bones in his hands and held them to his body and began to cry bitterly. After a while, he wrapped the bones in his shirt and carried them with him everywhere he went.

Many years passed and one night as the man sat in his house he heard knocking on his door. He called out, “Who’s there?” “It is I your son!” the voice outside replied. “My kidnappers set me free and I have spent all these years trying to find you!” Trembling the man yelled back, “You are an impostor and a cruel person. Holding the small bones to his body as he began to weep he replied, my son, is dead. Leave me alone, go away!” His son continued pounding on the door, but the man would not open the door.  After a while, he stopped pounding on the door and left crying. The man never found happiness and he lost his son who was still alive. Why, because he was determined to hold on to the bones of the past.

We are at the beginning of a New Year. This is a great opportunity for letting go of the bones of the past. Someone once said that God created us with eyes in the front of our heads so that when we tried to look back we would get a stiff neck. The possibilities of the future call us to look forward. The good news for us as the beginning of this New Year is that God has set us free, free from the bones of the past.

Some people are stagnate because they remember and relive old and painful memoirs. They are stagnate and paralyzed by old bones. Life does what it's supposed to do, and then we continue. For some, last year was a bad year. Despite what happened to us last year, the beginning of a new year is a time to liberate ourselves of the past and begin anew. A new beginning is possible.

Resolve to forget your defeats. For some, their defeats are painful memoirs. Perhaps it is a memory of how you failed in a relationship. Perhaps you made a few bad decisions, or said and did a few incorrect things. What the Word of God is saying is that we must not allow the defeats of the past to paralyze us and stop us from advancing. It is a time to say “I am going to forget my past. I must be going stop torturing myself over what I did or what I didn’t do”. It is a time to stop being chained to my past defeats. God does not want you to live your life as a failure.

In this New Year commit yourself to leave your grudges. What is a grudge? A grudge is a deep resentment that we cultivate in our hearts against someone. A grudge is a spirit that will not forgive and leads to similar actions and attitudes. To harbor a grudge is to have a feeling of resentment against someone. Grudges are dangerous because they are destructive. Grudges can destroy marriages, families, ruin friendships, and can divide churches.

If today you hold a grudge against someone, God is telling you to let it go. Grudges are not only destructive, they are also self-destructive. When you keep a grudge against someone you are hurt yourself more than the person who you have the grudge against. If you keep on harboring a grudge, with time it will destroy you, if not physically, surely emotionally, and spiritually. It will make you a bitter and angry person. Free yourself from your grudge, “forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye” (Colossians 3:13). According to the Word of God, the way of getting over a grudge is to forgive the offense.

God is not asking you to forget what was done to you. To pretend as nothing happened. What God is asking of you is to forgive the offense. What this implies is to admit that what was done was wrong and painful, but that you have decided to forgive the person who wronged you. I am sure that there is someone, who is reading this, who has to leave their grudges and forgive the offense that they have against someone. God is saying to you today that this resentment that is deeply rooted in you has to go. What better time to make this difficult decision to forgive then the beginning of this New Year? Now don't say, "But, it is that you don't understand". The truth is that you don't want to forgive.

Resolve to restore your relationships. Whenever I start up my computer it runs a program that checks all my programs to see if they are all working correctly. God in His Word asks us to do something similar in our lives, that every now and then we should do a checkup of our personal relationships to see if they are working correctly. Listen to what the Word of God says: “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:18). God is telling us that we must do everything that we can to restore our broken relationships.

Some of our relations might have been broken due to what others have done and they perhaps do not want to restore that relationship. God recognizes this. That's why; He starts by saying “If it is possible”. But some of our relationships have been broken due to what we have done. One of the things that you can do in this New Year is to admit your past errors and humbly seek the forgiveness of those that you have hurt. Make a commitment to restore your broken relationships in this New Year.

Make a commitment to turn your back on all your transgressions. After the Civil war was over and the slaves had been freed many of them decided to remain with their old masters and keep on doing what they told them. They were freed but they decided to continue living as slaves. This is exactly how some people have decided to live. Christ has made us free, but as those slaves, some still decide to obey their old master, sin. Listen to these words in Romans 6:16: “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey…”

Some people have some particular sins that they keep on committing. When we were saved we stop sinning, but there are other things that we know that are a sin that we still practice. Perhaps, this was the way you lived last year, constantly defeated by the same sin. Is your spiritual life stagnate because you have learned to live with a certain sin in your life? The Word of God challenges you to turn your back on that sin. It's time that this sin stops controlling your life. You don't have to live through this New Year being defeated by the same old sin. You can have the victory over it in this New Year.

Will this New Year be just another year for you, or will you make these changes and make it a year that changes your life. The Word of God tells us; "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians 4 13).
