EL ORIGEN DE LA NAVIDAD

 Jeremías 10:2-5; II Corintios 6:17; I Juan 2:15-16

THE ORIGIN OF CHRISTMAS

Jeremiah 10:2-5; II Cor. 6:17; I John 2:15-16

It is generally believed by many that Christmas, according to the Bible officially commemorates the birth of Jesus. Did the apostles, who knew Jesus personally and were taught by him, celebrate His birthday on December 25? Did they celebrate it at all? If Christmas is the chief of the Christian holidays, why do so many non-Christians observe it?

The word “Christmas” means “Mass of Christ,” or, as it came to be shortened, “Christ-Mass.” It came to non-Christians and Protestants from the Roman Catholic Church. And where did they get it? Not from the Bible or the apostles of Jesus, but was adopted by the Roman Catholic Church in the fourth century from paganism.

Since the celebration of Christmas has come to the world from the Roman Church, and has no authority but that of the Catholic church, lets examine the Catholic Encyclopedia, 1911 edition, published by that church. “Christ-mass was not among the earliest festivals of the Church… the first evidence of the feast is from Egypt.” “Pagan customs centering around the January calends gravitated to Christmas.” The Catholic Encyclopedia (vol. III p. 724) declares that Irenaeus and Tertullian do not make mention of this festival and they lived during the second century. It also states that by the time of Jerome and Augustine, the fourth century, the charismas festival was already established.

The Encyclopedia Britannica, 1946 edition, “Christmas (i.e., the Mass of Christ)… Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church…”

The Encyclopedia Americana, 1944 edition, “Christmas… it was, according to many authorities, not celebrated in the first Centuries of the Christian church, as the Christian usage in general was to celebrate the death of remarkable persons rather than their birth. (The “communion,” which is instituted by New Testament Bible authority, is a memorial of the death of Christ.)… A feast was established in memory of this event (Christ’s birth) in the fourth century. In the fifth century the Western Church ordered it to be celebrated forever on the day of the old Roman feast of the birth of Sol, as no certain knowledge of the day of Christ’s birth existed.”

These recognized historical authorities show Christmas was not observed by Christians for the first two or three hundred years. It got into the Western or Roman Church by the fourth century A.D.  It was not until the fifth century that the Catholic Church ordered it to be celebrated as an official Christian festival!

We do not know the exact date as to when Christmas began to be celebrated on December 25th. Before this date, the Church did not celebrate the birth of Christ. The writings of the New Testament indicate that Jesus was not born in that time of the year; the Historical data appear to indicate that He was born in the fall. We do not know the exact date because the Word of God does not declare it, neither does it make mention that the Primitive Apostolic Church celebrated the birth of Christ.

Jesus was not born in the winter season! When Jesus was born, the bible says there were shepherds in the field, watching over their sheep (Luke 2:8). This could have never occurred in Judea in the month of December. The shepherds always brought their flocks from the mountainsides and fields and corralled them no later than October 15th, to protect them from the cold, rainy season that followed that date (Song of Solomon 2:11; Ezra 10:9, 13) winter time is a rainy and cold season it does not permit shepherds to abide in open fields at nigh. (Adam Clarke Commentary, vol. 5 p.370: N.Y. ed.)

“It was an ancient custom among Jews of those days to send out their sheep to the fields and deserts about the Passover (early spring), and bring them home at commencement of the first rain. During the time they were out, the shepherds watched them night and day. As… the first rain began early in the month of Marchesvan, which answers to part of our October and November (begins sometime in October), we find that sheep were kept out in the open country during the whole summer. And, as there shepherds had not yet brought home their flocks, it is a presumptive argument that October had not yet commenced, and that, consequently, our Lord was not born on the 25th of December, when no flocks were out in the fields; nor could He have been born later than September, as the flocks were still in the fields by night. On these very grounds, the nativity in December should be given up. The feeding of the flocks by night in the fields is a chronological fact… See the quotations from the Talmudists in Lightfoot.”

The exact date of Jesus’ birth is entirely unknown. If Jesus had wished us to observe and celebrate His birthday, He would not have hidden completely the exact date.

The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge explains it clearly, in its article on Christmas: “How much the date of the festival depended upon the pagan Brumalia (Dec. 25th) following the Saturnalia (Dec. 17th – 24th), and celebrating the shortest day of the year and the “new sun”… cannot be accurately determined. The pagan Saturnalia and Brumalia were too deeply entrenched in popular custom to be set aside by Christian influence… The pagan festival with its riot and merrymaking was so popular that Christians were glad of an excuse to continue its celebration with little change in spiritual and in manner. Christian preachers of the West and the Near East protested against the unseemly frivolity with which Christ’s birthday was celebrated, while Christians of Mesopotamia accused their Western brethren of idolatry and sun worship for adopting as Christian this pagan festival.”

The Roman world had been pagan. Prior to the fourth century, Christians were few in number, though increasing, and were persecuted by the government and by pagans. But, with the advent of Constantine as emperor, who made his profession of Christianity in the fourth century, placing Christianity on an equal footing with paganism, people of the Roman world began to accept this now popular Christianity.

These people had grown up in pagan customs, chief of which was this idolatrous festival of December 25th. It was a festival of merrymaking, with its special spirit. They enjoyed it! They didn’t want to give it up! This is how “Christmas” became fastened on our Western World! We may call it by another name, but it’s the same old sun-worshipping festival still!

The Encyclopedia Britannica: “Certain Latin’s, as early as 354, may have transferred the birthday from January 6th to December 25th, which was then a Mithraic feast… or birthday of the unconquered Sun… The Syrians and Armenians, who clung to January 6th, accused the Romans of sun worship and idolatry, contending… that the feast of December 25th had been invented by disciples of Cerinthus…”

THE REAL ORIGIN OF CHRISTMAS

If we got Christmas from the Roman Catholics, and they got it from paganism, where did the pagans get it? Where, when and what was its real origin? It is a chief custom of the corrupt system denounced all through Bible prophecies and teachings under the name of Babylon, and it started and originated in the original Babylon of ancient Nimrod! It stems from roots whose beginning was shortly this side of the Flood!

Nimrod, grandson of Ham, son of Noah, was the real founder of the Babylonish system that has gripped the world ever since. Nimrod built the tower of Babel, the original Babylon, ancient Nineveh and many other cities. The name Nimrod, in Hebrew, is derived from “Marad,” meaning “he rebelled.”

From many ancient writings, much is learned of this man. Nimrod was an evil man; he married his own mother, Semiramis. After Nimrod’s untimely death, his mother-wife propagated the evil doctrine of the survival of Nimrod as a spirit being. She claimed a full grown evergreen tree sprang overnight from a dead tree stump, which symbolized the springing forth unto new life of the dead Nimrod. On each anniversary of his birth, she claimed, Nimrod would visit the evergreen tree and leave gifts under it. December 25th was the birthday of Nimrod. This is the real origin of the Christmas tree.

Some countries that celebrated festivals on the 25th of December centuries before the birth of Christ were England, Syria and Babylon. The Roman Empire (Christianized) adopted this day, the 25th of December like a Christian festival in the year 354 A.D. by pope Liberius 357 years after the birth of Christ. Until that year only the Roman pagans celebrated festivals on that day.

For more then 250 years after the birth of Christ the Romans worshiped many gods, the main deity being Jupiter. His festival was celebrated in September. In the year 273 A.D. Jupiter was dethroned and another deity was put in his place, who was the supreme god of Rome, it was the god of the sun,

Bel or Baal. The Roman Emperor who was responsible for this change was Aurelia’s. He declared the Babylonian Baal the supreme god of the Roman Empire under the name of the Invictus sun “Invisible God”.

What was it that caused the Emperor Aurelia’s to change gods? It was that during his life he had become interested in the religions of Persia and Babylon and at the same time there was many Romans that considered that Jupiter was out of style and they didn’t serve him with much dedication and this is also what influence the Emperor to look for a more attractive religion for the Roman populace. Another thing that influenced in this was that through the years, many people had migrated to the oriental countries and the majority of them worshiped the deities, that represented the sun and also Romans that had returned form those countries brought the doctrines of that religion that adored the sun with them.

Why did the pagan Romans worship the sun on the 25th of December? According to the Julian calendar it was accepted that the 25th day of December was the birth of the sun, for it was when the sun began to expand and it increased its power or force, it turned on its axis. It was a time for festivals, great idolatry joy, and ended in a general drunkenness with sensual pleasures. During that time the Persians also introduced the Roman soldiers to their system of worshiping the sun. Their Festival was in honor of Mitra the god of the sun. The participants would enter some special chapels and at midnight they would come out shouting in high voice “The virgin has conceived!” “The light is shining!”

The Egyptians represented the birth of the sun with the image of a child and on the 25th of December they would present the image of the child to the people. It was believed that the virgin that conceived that child (the sun) on that day was the oriental goddess whom the Semites called the celestial virgin or the celestial goddess. (Golden Rough page 358 abr.) Notice that the pagans observed a festival on December 25th many years before Jesus was born. They also worshiped a “mother and child.” The deferent’s was that for them the mother was the queen of the heaven and the child was the god of the reincarnated sun.

Why was this day chosen (Dec. 25) by the Christians to celebrate the birth of Christ? About half a century after the worship of the sun god Baal was introduced to the Romans, Constantine was converted. The church encouraged him to discard all the pagan festivals and the one on December 25th was one of them, but there were no results, because the pagans didn’t want to leave their festivals. Consulting with the Emperor the leaders of the church influenced the Emperor to sign a decree that all those prisoners that would get baptized would be given their freedom. It was believed that by doing this it would encourage those who were baptized to stop worshiping the sun god. It resulted contrary to their belief, because the pagans that got baptized continued every year worshiping the god of the sun on the 25th of December.

The church was in a dilemma but Constantine had the answer and told the leaders of the church that they arrive at a compromise with the baptized pagans and that they allow them to retain their festivals. The advice of Constantine was this “Don’t make it more difficult so that the pagans are converted without making it easier,” and the church accepted his advice. The historians of those centuries wrote that the church was very willing to arrive at a compromise with the pagans and permit them to retain their festivals which they were accustomed to celebrating and give them a “Christian dress” or giving them a “Christian meaning”. (The Bible for Learners vol. III – page 67).

Not being able to abolish the customs of the pagans the church tried to “purify” these festivals and customs that the pagans loved so much. The church tried to distract the attention of the Christians from the pagan festivals with celebrating festivals on the same day. So that the pagans should no longer worship the god of the sun, Baal, on the 25th of December, but rather now they should worship the Son of God on that day, but still using some customs and pagan methods.

December 25th is not the birthday of Jesus! The apostles and early Apostolic Church never celebrated Christ’s birthday at any time. There is no command or instruction to celebrate it in the Bible. However, we are commanded to observe, not celebrate, the date of His death (I Cor.11:24-26; John 13:14-17).

LA GLORIFICACION

I Corintios 15:51-53

GLORIFICATION

I Corinthians 15:51-53

Glorification is the third step in the justification-sanctification-glorification chain. In the Scripture the idea of glorification deals with the ultimate perfection of the believer. The word "glorification" is not used in the Hebrew Old Testament or the Greek New Testament, but the idea of glorification is suggested by the Greek verb doxazo ("glorify") and the noun doxa ("glory") as well as in passages that do not use any word from this root. Although the Old Testament may anticipate the theme to some extent (Psalm 73:24; Dan 12:3), the New Testament is more detailed in its development, making it explicit that believers will be glorified (Romans 8:17, 8:30; II Thess 1:12).

Our bodies will experience glorification. We will not be changed into some sort of spirit-entity as many of the cults teach. Jesus Himself demonstrated this when He appeared to the disciples after the resurrection (John 20:26-27; Luke 24:29). It is at the time of glorification that the sanctification process is fully complete, our bodies will be changed, the old sin nature will be eliminated, and we will see Christ in all his glory (II Corinthians 5:2-4).

Glorification is God's final removal of sin from the life of the saints in the eternal state (Romans 8:18; II Corinthians 4:17). At the Rapture when Jesus comes, the saints will undergo a fundamental, instant transformation (“we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” 1 Corinthians 15:51); then our corruptible bodies will put on incorruption immortality (1 Corinthians 15:53). II Corinthians 3:18 clearly indicates that, in a mysterious sense, “we all,” in the present, “with unveiled face” are “beholding the glory of the Lord” and are being transformed into His image “from one degree of glory to another” (II Corinthians 3:18). Lest anyone imagine that this beholding and transformation (as part of sanctification) is the work of especially saintly people, the Scripture adds the following admonition: “For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” In other words, it is a blessing bestowed on every believer. This does not refer to our final glorification, but to an aspect of sanctification by which the Spirit is transfiguring us right now. To Him be the praise for His work in sanctifying us in the Spirit and in truth (Jude 24-25; John 17:17; 4:23).

Glorification involves first of all the believer's sanctification or moral perfection (I Thess 2:13-14 ; Heb 2:10-11), in which the believer will be made glorious, holy, and blameless (Eph 5:27). The process of sanctification is at work in us now (I Cor 3:18 ) but moves from one degree of glory to another until it reaches final glory.

Second, the body participates in glorification (Rom 8:23; 1 Col 15:43; Php 3:21), which is the believer's deliverance and liberty (Rom 8:21). As a result, the glorified body is immortal (Rom 2:7), imperishable, powerful, and spiritual (1 Cor 15:43-44). Moreover, creation itself participates in this aspect of glorification (Rom 8:21).

In the third place, glorification brings participation in the kingdom of God (1 Thess 2:12 ), even to the point of our reigning with Christ (II Tim 2:10-12).

Finally, glorification is in some sense a partaking of God's own glory (Rom 5:2; 1 Thess 2:12 ; II Thess 2:14 ; 1 Peter 5:10).

Our appreciation of God's grace will be increased if we understand glorification in relationship to the other aspects of our salvation. The salvation Christ won for us is applied to us in stages, rather than all at once. The first stage is when God, through the preaching of the gospel calls us to repentance. God then justifies us. Justification is a legal act of God in which He forgives our sins, gives to us the righteousness of Christ, and declares us righteous in His sight.

At death (or the rapture) God completes our sanctification, and so removes all of our sins from our hearts and makes us perfectly holy. But even though our sanctification is complete at death, our salvation is not yet complete because we are still without our glorified resurrection bodies. These are given in the final stage of the application of our salvation, which is glorification. Then our salvation will be fully applied to us, and we will live forever in the new heavens and new earth as glorified saints, enjoying all of the benefits of salvation that Christ won for us.

Even though our bodies will be raised, Christians who die still go through a period of time when they exist apart from their bodies, called the intermediate state. When a believer dies his soul is separated from his body. His body remains on earth, but his soul immediately goes to be with Christ in heaven. We know this because Paul says that to be absent from the body at death is to be present with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23).

The Bible does not teach that our souls sleep in the period of time between death and the resurrection. Rather, upon death the believer goes right to heaven and experiences the great blessings of communion with Christ at a far deeper level than anything experienced on earth. Thus, Paul says that "to be with Christ is very much better" than living on earth.

But there is something even better than being with Christ in heaven as disembodied souls, being with Christ, in heaven, in our bodies. This seems to be what Paul is getting at in II Corinthians 5:4 when he says "we do not want to be unclothed, but to be clothed" (v-4) and that "[we] long to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven" (v-2). He is saying that the resurrection state will be so great that he wishes he could go right to it.

When a believer dies his spirit is separated from his body and goes to be with Christ. This intermediate state will be a very great joy, but the ultimate hope we are to look forward to is the even more joyful fellowship with Christ once our bodies are raised and reunited with our spirits.

It is important to understand that it is not only believers who will experience the resurrection of their bodies. All people will have their bodies raised. The difference is that believers will have their bodies raised to everlasting glory; unbelievers will have their bodies raised to everlasting destruction. There are many passages which teach that both believers and unbelievers will be raised. Acts 24:15 says, "There shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked." Paul tells us how he applies this truth in the next verse: "In view of this, I also do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience both before God and before men." John 5:28-29 says, "For an hour is coming , in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment." Unbelievers will thus suffer eternal punishment in their bodies, in hell: "And do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28).

According to Philippians 3:20–21, our citizenship is in heaven, and when our Savior returns He will transform our lowly bodies “to be like His glorious body.” Although it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, we know that, when He returns in great glory, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is (1 John 3:2). We will be perfectly conformed to the image of our Lord Jesus and be like Him in that our humanity will be free from sin and its consequences. Our blessed hope should spur us on to holiness, the Spirit enabling us. “Everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure” (1 John 3:3).

THIS IS THANKSGIVING

“Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” Psalm 100
On Thanksgiving Day, the President of the United States will call the people of this country to prayer. It is perhaps ironic that while our Constitution forbids the establishment of religion there are times when it appears perfectly acceptable for the nation's highest elected official to lead the people in prayer. This is especially apparent in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks which inspired so much prayer in public places led by so many elected officials. When you think about it, Thanksgiving is unique among the nation's holidays in placing an act of prayer, front and center. To be sure, this message is not always communicated very clearly.

It sometimes seems that Thanksgiving is our most self-congratulatory moment. As families gather around their tables filled with so many good things to eat, ¿Is the real purpose of this holiday to catalogue all our success, to list our achievements, to enjoy our good fortune that we happen to live in the richest and most powerful nation in the world?  ¿Or is there something deeper calling to us from within this nation's singular call to prayer?

There was a woman who boarded a bus. Every seat was filled. She was tired and carried several packages. Noticing her dilemma, a certain man stood up and graciously offered his seat to the woman. The woman was so shocked by what the man did that she fainted. After she was revived, she looked up at the man who had relinquished his seat and said, "Thank you." When the man heard this he promptly fainted.

The point of this humorous story is that many people don't bother saying "thank-you" anymore. This is  sad because thankfulness is good for the soul.

The Bible teaches that a thankful attitude joins heaven and earth; whereas, an ungrateful attitude keeps heaven and earth, the spiritual and the material, separate. When we are thankful, we recognize that food, shelter, and all other necessities come to us because of the mercy of Almighty God. Thankfulness turns our hearts towards heaven. Thankfulness is one of the things that lifts us above the level of the beasts.

Many Americans think of Thanksgiving as a wonder full time to celebrate getting out of school for a long weekend and eating a big meal. Or, maybe they think it is the start of the Christmas holiday season. ¿What is the real meaning behind Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is supposed to be one of our main national holidays. A good question to ask is “¿Are we celebrating Thanksgiving the way that God wants us to celebrate it?” ¿Have we lost the emphasis of thanksgiving and shifted it to a gluttonous feast of food, drink and football games?  Many people today refer to this holiday as "turkey day" instead of Thanksgiving Day. Many people have eliminated the object of who we are to offer our thanks. We are just to be "thankful" we are told. ¿But to whom should our thanks be directed to? The object of our thanks for our many blessings should be directed to God. It should not just be a general "thanks." To whom, and for what are we thankful on Thanksgiving Day?

We can trace this historic American Christian tradition to the year 1623. After the harvest crops were gathered in November 1623, Governor William Bradford of the Pilgrim Colony, “Plymouth Plantation” in Plymouth, Massachusetts proclaimed: “All ye pilgrims with your wives and little ones, do gather at the Meeting House, on the hill… there to listen to the pastor, and render Thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings.”

This is the origin of our annual Thanksgiving Day celebration. The Congress of the United States has proclaimed National Days of Thanksgiving to God many times throughout the years. On November 1, 1777, by order of Congress, the first National Thanksgiving Proclamation was signed proclaiming the third Thursday of December as the official day of thanksgiving. On January 1, 1795, George Washington, proclaimed Thursday, the 19th day of February, as the National Day of Thanksgiving. Many years later, on October 3, 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, by act of congress, an annual National Day of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November.

This Thursday we will celebrate this national holiday, ¿But are we going to celebrate it in the right manner? We must not forget that the main purpose of this day is for prayer and thanksgiving, and not only feasting and fellowship. God is not opposed to our feasting and our gathering of friends and family to eat together, ¿But if our only prayer is to ask God to bless the food that we are going to eat, ¿Are we not forgetting the real meaning of this day? God delights in blessing us as His children. ¿However, do we, as His children delight in blessing Him with our prayers and thanks? ¿Dose our celebrations revolve more around the meal and the football games that follow, than around the discussion of the things we should be thankful for? Many are worshipping the idol of ball games on holidays instead of focusing on the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Let us ask God to forgive us and truly celebrate this day in real thanksgiving and prayer.

On this Thanksgiving Day we want to give thanks. On this Thanksgiving Day we want to join the material world to the spiritual. On this Thanksgiving Day we want to dedicate to God what has been given to us. ¿How do we go about doing this?

First of all, we should thank God for life. He has made us and formed us. Only in Him do we live and move and have our being. Only in Him do we have the ability to think and enjoy and respond and wonder. Only in Him can we jump and run and play and learn. Only in Him can we eat and sleep and love. So we thank God for life.

Second, we should thank God for health. Many of you have suffered health problems throughout this year. It seems that it is only when we face sickness that we appreciate health and strength.

Third, we should thank God for providing for our physical needs. Yes, some of us could have more things or better things; even so, we have food, clothes on our bodies, a roof over our heads, and a car in the garage. These are common material things, but they do not come by chance. We know they are gifts from the Giver above. We should remember that in many places around the world very few people dare to take these common blessings for granted.

Fourth, we should also thank God for our families. For some people, it is painful to remember family relationships broken by death or divorce. But even as we feel such grief, we can be thankful for those who uphold us and love us still. Our families are precious. Thanksgiving is a time for husbands to thank Almighty God for their wives, and for wives to thank God for their husbands; for parents and children to thank God for each other; for all of us to thanks God for the companionship of friends.
Fifth, and most important, we should thank God for grace and salvation. God has blessed us with every sort of spiritual blessing. He has taken us who were lost in sin and evil and renewed us to be like Jesus. He has removed from us the fear of judgment and everlasting hell fire.

There are times, of course, when we all are tempted to feel ungrateful. At such times it is good for you to contemplate the good things God has done for you. May I offer this suggestion: take time this week to write on a card small enough to fit into your wallet, 10 great things God has done for you. Then, whenever you are tempted to feel ungrateful, pull out that card and start thinking about the mercies you have written down. By thinking about God's past provision, you'll be encouraged to trust in His power to provide and protect in the present.

A man who owned a small property wanted to sell it. Sending for a real estate agent, he asked him to write an advertisement describing the house and land. When the ad was ready, the agent took it to the owner and read it to him. "Read that again," said the owner.

The agent read the description of the property once more. "I don't think I will sell it after all," said the owner. "I have been looking for a property like that all my life and I did not know that I owned it!"

Count your blessings – yes, but start by asking God to open your eyes to see the many blessings and things God has given to you. That will change your entire perspective and enable you to praise and thank God always.
