THE BIBLICAL RESPONSE TO ABORTION

Genesis 1:2, 9:6, Isaiah 44:24

Cultures can be judged in many ways, but eventually every nation in every age must be judged by this test: How did it treat its people? Each generation, evaluates its predecessors on this basis. The final measure of mankind's humanity is how humanely people treat one another. This issue is volatile because of what’s at stake: “human life!

Abortionist claims that it is a "woman's right to private choice.” It is her civil right!  It's her body! Is it her body? Medically yes, spiritually no! (I Corinthians 6:19-20; 7:1-5)

There is no question about the pro choice concept if we were discussing a simple medical issue: gall stones, tumor, tonsils, kidneys, but when human life is at issue: it is everyone's concern!

We do have some limited freedoms. I have freedom of speech but I cannot yell fire in a crowded auditorium. My freedom of speech ends where the endangerment of others starts.

Abortion is an old issue: Dates back over 2,000 yrs to Pagan cultures! There was obviously a public outcry at some point. In Bible days children were looked down with disdain of sorts until Jesus elevated them to a significant level (Luke 18:15-17).  Jesus showed the true value of children!

Athenagorus was a second century Christian that was called upon to defend the Christian faith against certain charges. He outlined the basic Christian position of the early church as follows:

1. Abortion is considered murder

2. The guilty must give account to God

3. The fetus is a living being, the object of God's care

The reason this issue is alive again is the humanist sexual revolution! Humanism says: “Personal gratification repudiates Biblical morality!”

To be "sexually free" has caused bondage in other areas though: Sexual transmitted deceases, aids, divorce, broken families! There are no "free" choices! Every choice carries a cost!

The Allen Guttmacher Institute, research arm of Planned Parenthood reported the following findings

1. 1% of abortions are due to incest or rape

2. 1% is because of fetal deformities

3. 4% were due to a doctor deciding the mother’s life was in danger

4. 50% woman said they did not want to be a single parent, they were having relationship problems

5. 66 % said they could not afford a child

6. 76 % said child would interfere with their lifestyle

It is sad to say but it is a fact, 95% of abortions that are preformed are for convenience of the mother! Abortion is murdering for convenience. It is exchanging the murder of an innocent little human for sex, money, career, education, and material goods. This is not love, but hate. Abortion is a hate crime. No one murders someone they love.

THE ROOT OF THE DEBATE: WHEN DOES LIFE BEGIN?

Some say that a fetus is only a mass of unviable tissue; it is only "potential" life. These people view a pregnancy as a "what" instead of a "who". If a fetus isn't a human being, then what kind of being is it? If it is growing, it must be alive. If it is not alive, then why does it have to be killed? Fetus is the Latin word for infant. The child is called an infant both inside and outside the womb. Note that when a woman was pregnant in the Bible (Luke 2:5), she was said to be "with child." Therefore, the only distinction between the word child in the womb or outside is the word "with."

From the biological standpoint, human life obviously begins at the moment of conception, exactly when the sperm fertilizes the egg. Doctors tell us that the moment of conception unites 23 chromosomes into 46 chromosomes. Full human DNA is ready. The fertilized egg has all the information in the genes that make a human being, all the information that makes us. In fact, for the rest of our life, no new information is ever adding. Therefore, it is obvious that human life begins at the moment of conception.

BIBLICAL CONCEPT:  Job 31:13-15; Isa. 44:24, 49:1; Ps. 139:13; Jer. 1:4-8

The law of the land is an unbiblical view. We need to honor the Bible! We must make biblical choices! Human life is more valuable. All life comes from God! All life was created by God, but only Humans bear his image (not animal life) Gen. 9:5-6. God has set mankind apart among his creation: It is not self evaluation! In fact, most evolutionists accept that human life begins at the moment of conception, but because they believe in evolution and therefore believe that we are just animals, for them abortion is no different from kill mice.

Exodus 21:22 tells us that to harm an unborn was looked upon the same as harming an already born child. The only way the abortionist can change their minds is to accept the first verse of Genesis: "In the beginning God created ..." and listening to the words of the Creator in Psalm 51, "in sin my mother conceived me." That means that we are sinful human from the moment of conception. God created us, therefore abortion is a horrible sin.

There is never a time when it is right to take that unborn life. To deny them the right to their life would be a crime against humanity. The Bible teaches that the baby who has been conceived and lives in its mother's womb is a living human being, a separate and distinct person from its parents. Therefore, it has just as much right to live as any other human being. To deliberately kill it would be just as wrong as killing any other innocent human being.

The Bible provides the necessary steps to solve the abortion "dilemma" for those who are willing to respect its teachings:

1. Flee fornication.

2. Learn to love, appreciate, and care for the baby.

3. Learn to trust God for the strength to face any hardships life brings. Study His word, pray, and seek help from other Christians.

4. Help others who have needs or problems caused by the birth of a baby.

5. Speak out in defense of life. Seek to deliver those who are about to be slain (Prov. 24:11,12). Do not compromise with sin, but reprove it (Eph. 5:11; 2 Tim. 4:2-4; Prov. 28:4; Gal. 6:1, etc.).

The pro-life position is not something that modern Christians invented after Roe v. Wade. Christians have been pro-life from the beginning. The prochoice position is nothing more than an accommodation to modern secular beliefs, and flies in the face of the Bible and the historical position of the church. If the church is to be the church, it must challenge and guide the morality of society. Is abortion biblical? No. On the contrary, it is an abomination in the sight of God (Psalm 82:3-4, 127:3).

What should a woman do if she has aborted a baby and now realizes she did wrong? She does not need to spend the rest of her life with the burden of unforgiven guilt. The Bible says abortion is wrong, but it also gives something else that humanistic beliefs cannot give: a source of true forgiveness for guilt. God will forgive if we will come to Him according to His conditions.
