A majority of American doctors believe that women in the premenopausal period (this is the period immediately prior and immediately to the onset of menopause, and lasts an average of four years), are at much higher risk to eventually having to have a hysterectomy and an ovariectomy simultaneously (partial or total excision of an ovary).

3. Nearly 12 million American women are in the premenopausal transition.

Dr. Cutler adds: "The study suggests that the increase in bleeding, which in turn increases the likelihood of the need for a hysterectomy, could be caused, at least partially, in the sexual behavior of women. We refer to sex during menstruation. Therefore women should know that abstaining from penetrative sex during menstruation prevent unnecessary hysterectomies. "
