THE EFFECT OF THE WORD OF GOD IN THE BELIEVER

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (II Timothy 3:16-17)

IT MAKES US STRONG

Nobody wants to be weak, not either physically or spiritually, along with prayer, reading the Bible is the most effective way of receiving spiritual strength. A large number of those who fail in their spiritual life fail because of the absence of the Word of God in their daily lives. They might have avoided these defeats if they had proposed to read and study the Bible consistently and in a disciplined manner; the daily reading of the Bible produces in our spiritual life, what daily food to our body: vitality and strength, because: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God” (Luke 4:4).  

IT GIVES US CONFIDENCE IN WHAT WE BELIEVE

The first difficulties that the new believer faces are the doubts as to what we believe. What is said and promised to who surrenders to Christ is very great and wonderful; so much that they seem to be a fantasy. It is very easy for the enemy to sow doubts in the heart if the scripture is not known with certainty. The more the scripture is known, the more solid our faith becomes; the more the Bible is understood, the more it becomes a part of us. If we desire to enjoy security in terms of salvation, faith, God's love, his forgiveness, his faithfulness and his compassion, we must begin to study the Word regularly, since it constitutes the only source to obtain this security.

IT GIVES US CONFIDENCE AND POWER IN PRAYER

The Lord said: "If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, ask what you want and it will be done” (John 15:7). This means that the study of the Bible gives us power in prayer, because reading it, Christ's words remain in us. The Bible tells us how to pray and how to do it successfully so God will answer us.

IT CLEANSES US OF SIN

The Word of God has a purifying effect in the believer; Jesus prayed saying:“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17:17). In some way the Word of God cleanses the believer while it passes through his mind and heart as he reads it. He becomes aware of what is good and what God does not like, and as an automatic process his commandments are engraved in the depths of our subconscious; and this, when the occasion to sin presents itself, he rejects it. Every new believer needs to know with clarity what sin is and what is not, God has not left it to our own discretion, but to his word. In the light of his word any doubt concerning the purity of anything of which we are not sure is cleared up. “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” (Psalm 119: 9). He, who studies the Bible, will learn to distinguish what is sin and it he will be clean of his sin; since, on having learned to identify it, he will be able to avoid it. The Bible will drive us away from sin or sin will drive us away from the Bible.

IT GIVES US JOY

One of the blessings of the Christian life is joy; but often the problems of life drown it. Christ said: “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). The reading of God’s Word brings joy to the heart, whatever the circumstances might be. Jeremiah said: “Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.” (15:16).

IT INFORMS US OF OUR DUTIES AS CHRISTIANS

The Bible is full of commandments that God established for his people to keep and obey. These commandments are for our good, and each of them was designed by the Lord to avoid some evil or suffering; so to obey them prolongs our life, it enriches us and what is more, it guarantees us eternal life. King David said: “The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.” (Psalm 19:8). God said to Moses: “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” (Exodus 15: 26).

IT INFORMS US OF WHAT BELONGS TO US AS CHILDREN OF GOD

The Bible is full of promises that belong to us as children of God. From beginning to end the scripture is saturated with blessings that The Lord promises to all those who love him. Despite the fact that the Lord promises us so many things, and that he has more to give us than what we have to ask him, there are still many who do not receive them nor do they enjoy them simply because they are unaware of them. The reading of the Word of God provides us information about all the blessings available to his children. Paul said: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthian 2: 9). Peter said: “(God) has given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature ...” (II Peter 1: 4).

IT SHOWS US GOD'S WILL

God has a plan and purpose for each of his children, this plan and purpose the Bible calls “The Will of God”. In the pages of the Bible we find what the Will of God is for our life. If we want to know exactly what God wants to do in our life, our home, our hearth, work and church, we must look diligently in prayer for the Will of God in the Bible: “And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2: 17).

IT GUIDES US IN LIFE'S DECISIONS

The Bible is the best manual on the human behavior that has ever been written, because it contains thousands of practical principles, of usefulness and permanent value for our daily life. These principles contains a wealth of divine knowledge which guides the believer and it helps him to program his behavior in advance, so that, when there comes a moment to make decisions, there is no need to undergo a distressing process of reflection to make the right decision. For the Christian who knows the Bible, the problem of making decisions is simplified. The Bible illuminates us. King David said on this matter: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalms 119:105). God's council and principles serve us as a guide, and light our understanding to face and make decisions in our life. It is very good to prepare yourself to live in accordance with the Biblical principles, storing them in our hart in advance, before crises arise.

The Bible contains therefore a great number of commandments, advice and warnings for almost all situations which may arise in the course of our life. If every day we fill our mind with the Word of God, it will illuminate the dark paths of the future with direction and divine council, and we will avoid making wrong decisions. David said: “Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11).

IT ENABLES US TO GIVE EXPRESSION TO OUR FAITH

Many of the people around us do not know the Word of God; and in many cases you will be the only person who can speak to them about God, His love and what He wants to do in the life of man. You are responsible for communicating and conveying what you believe and have received from God to whom he needs to listen. Peter said: But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear…” (1 Peter 3: 15).

The only way to be able to: Answer the one that has doubts, to quiet the one who mocks, or guide the one that sincerely looks for the truth, will be being always prepared reading and studying every day the scripture. If you wish to share Christ with others effectively, it is indispensable that you at least have a basic knowledge of the Word of God.

IT GUARANTEES US SUCCESS

We all desire to have success in the field of activity that we have chosen. The reading of the Bible teaches us how to prosper and how to lead us so that everything well turn out well for us. God's secret on how to achieve success is revealed to us in the Bible. Throughout all the pages of the Bible lie embedded the deepest and most revealing councils of God to reach the peak of triumph.

Meditating or reflecting daily on the word of God will lead us to discover and decipher the Councils of God; and at the same time they are maintained fresh in our mind and heart, guaranteeing us the success that we all look for: “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper” (Psalm 1:1-3).

This kind of daily productivity is the result of feeding the mind every day with the Word of God. Regrettably many believers believe that they are too busy to devote time to the reading of the Bible and refreshing the mind every day with the Word of God. If only they understood that a moment of withdrawal with God daily will make your day more productive, you will yield more and obtain better results.

EL EFECTO DE LA PALABRA DE DIOS EN EL CREYENTE

“Toda la Escritura es inspirada por Dios, y útil para enseñar, para redargüir, para corregir, para instruir en justicia, a fin de que el hombre de Dios sea perfecto, enteramente preparado para toda buena obra.” (II Timoteo 3:16-17)

NOS HACE FUERTE

Nadie quiere estar débil, ni física ni espiritualmente, Junto con la oración, la lectura de la Biblia es la forma más eficaz de recibir fortaleza espiritual. Un gran numero de las personas que fracasan en su vida espiritual, fracasan debido a la ausencia de la Palabra de Dios en su vida diaria. Se hubieran podido evitar esos fracasos si dichas personas se hubieran propuesto a leer y estudiar la Biblia constante y disciplinadamente; la lectura diaria de la Biblia produce en nuestra vida espiritual, lo que el alimento diario a nuestro cuerpo: vitalidad y fortaleza, porque: “No sólo de pan vivirá el hombre, sino de toda palabra de Dios” (Lucas 4:4)
.

NOS DA SEGURIDAD EN CUANTO A LO QUE CREEMOS

Las primeras dificultades que afronta el nuevo creyente son las dudas en cuanto a lo que creemos. Lo que se dice y promete a quien se entrega a Cristo es muy grande y maravilloso, tanto que parecieran ser una fantasía. Es muy fácil que el enemigo siembre dudas en el corazón si no se conoce con certeza la escritura. Cuanto más se conoce la palabra, más sólida se hace nuestra fe; cuanto más se entiende la Biblia, mas se hace parte de nosotros. Si deseamos disfrutar de seguridad en cuanto a la salvación, la fe, el amor de Dios, su perdón, su fidelidad y su misericordia, debemos comenzar a estudiar la Palabra regularmente, ya que ella constituye la única fuente para obtener dicha seguridad.

NOS DA CONFIANZA Y PODER EN LA ORACIÓN

El Señor dijo: “Si permanecéis en mí, y mis palabras permanecen en vosotros, pedid todo lo que queréis y os será hecho” (Juan 15:7). Esto significa que el estudio de la Biblia nos da poder en la oración, pues leyéndola, las palabras de Cristo permanecen en nosotros. La Biblia nos dice como orar, como hacerlo con éxito y de manera que Dios nos responda.

NOS LIMPIA DE PECADO

La Palabra de Dios tiene un efecto purificador en el creyente; Jesús oró diciendo; “Santifícalos en tu verdad; tu palabra es verdad” (Juan 17:17). De algún modo la Palabra de Dios limpia al creyente mientras pasa por su mente y su corazón al leerla. Estos cobran conciencia de lo que es bueno y lo que no agrada a Dios, y como un proceso automático sus mandamientos quedan grabados en lo más profundo de nuestro subconsciente; y este, al presentarse la oferta de pecar, la rechaza. Todo nuevo creyente necesita saber con claridad lo que es pecado y que no lo es, Dios no nos ha dejado juzgar a nuestro propio criterio, sino al de su palabra. A la luz de su palabra se aclara toda duda respecto la pureza de cualquier cosa de la que no estemos seguros. “¿Con qué limpiará el hombre su camino? Con guardar su palabra” (Salmo 119: 9). El que estudia la Biblia, aprenderá a distinguir lo que es pecado y será limpio de su pecado; pues al aprender a identificarlo podrá evitarlo. La Biblia nos aleja del pecado o el pecado nos aleja de la Biblia.

NOS DA GOZO

 Una de las bendiciones de la vida cristiana es el gozo; pero con frecuencia los problemas de la vida lo ahogan. Cristo dijo: “Estas cosas os he hablado, para que mi gozo este en vosotros, y vuestro gozo sea cumplido” (Juan 15:11). La lectura de la Palabra de Dios trae gozo al corazón, cualesquiera que sean las circunstancias. Jeremías dijo: “Fueron halladas tus palabras, y yo las comí; y tu palabra me fue  por gozo y por alegría de mi corazón...” (Jeremías 15: 16).

NOS INFORMA DE NUESTROS DEBERES COMO CRISTIANOS

 La Biblia está llena de mandamientos que Dios dejó establecidos para que su pueblo guarde y obedezca. Estos mandamientos son para nuestro bien, y cada uno de ellos fue diseñado por el Señor para evitarnos algún mal o sufrimiento; así que el obedecerlos nos prolonga la vida, nos enriquece y lo que es mas, nos garantiza la vida eterna. El rey David dijo: “Los mandamientos de Jehová son rectos, que alegran el corazón; el precepto de Jehová es puro, que alumbra los ojos” (Salmo 19: 8). Dios dijo a Moisés: “Si oyeres atentamente la voz de Jehová tu Dios, e hicieres lo recto delante de sus ojos, y dieres oído a sus mandamientos, y guardares todos sus estatutos, ninguna enfermedad de las que envié a los egipcios te enviaré a ti; porque yo soy Jehová tu sanador” (Éxodo 15: 26).

NOS INFORMA DE LO QUE NOS PERTENECE COMO HIJOS DE DIOS

La Biblia está llena de promesas que nos pertenecen como hijos de Dios. De principio a fin las escrituras están saturadas de bendiciones que El Señor promete a todos los que le aman. A pesar de que el Señor nos promete tantas cosas, y que él tiene mas que darnos que nosotros que pedirle, hay aún muchos que no las reciben ni las disfrutan simplemente porque las desconocen. La lectura de la Palabra de Dios nos proporciona información acerca de todas las bendiciones disponibles para sus hijos. Pablo dijo: “Cosas que ojo no vio, ni oído oyó, Ni han subido en corazón de hombre, Son las que Dios ha preparado para los que le aman” (1 Corintios 2: 9). Pedro dijo también: “Nos ha dado (Dios) preciosas y grandísimas promesas, para que por ellas llegaseis a ser participantes de la naturaleza divina...” (II Pedro 1: 4).

NOS MUESTRA LA VOLUNTAD DE DIOS

Dios tiene un plan y propósito para cada uno de sus hijos, a este plan y propósito la Biblia lo llama “la voluntad de Dios”. En las paginas de la Biblia encontramos cual es la voluntad de Dios para nuestra vida. Si queremos saber con exactitud lo que Dios desea hacer en nuestra vida, hogar, trabajo e iglesia, debemos buscar diligentemente en oración la voluntad de Dios en la Biblia. “Y el mundo pasa, y sus deseos; pero el que hace la voluntad de Dios permanece para siempre” (1 Juan 2: 17).

NOS ORIENTA EN DECISIONES DE LA VIDA

La Biblia es el mejor manual sobre el comportamiento humano que jamás se haya escrito, pues contiene miles de principios prácticos, de utilidad y valor permanente para nuestra vida diaria. Estos principios contienen un caudal de sabiduría divina la cual guía al creyente y lo ayuda a programar su comportamiento por adelantado, de modo que, cuando llega el momento de tomar decisiones, no hay necesidad de someterse a un angustioso proceso de reflexión para tomar la decisión adecuada. Para el cristiano que conoce la Biblia, el problema de tomar decisiones se simplifica. La Biblia nos ilumina. El rey David dijo al respecto: “Lámpara es a mis pies tu palabra, y lumbrera a mi camino” (Salmo 119:105). Los consejos y principios de Dios nos sirven de guía, y alumbran nuestro entendimiento al enfrentar y tomar decisiones en nuestra vida. Es muy bueno prepararse para vivir de acuerdo con los principios bíblicos, atesorándolos en nuestro corazón por anticipado, antes que se presenten las crisis.

La Biblia contiene pues, un sin numero de mandamientos, consejos y advertencias para casi todas las situaciones que puedan presentarse en el transcurso de nuestra vida. Si diariamente llenamos nuestra mente con la palabra de Dios, ella iluminará las oscuras sendas del futuro con la dirección y el consejo divino, y nos evitará tomar decisiones equivocadas. David dijo: “En mi corazón he guardado tus dichos, Para no pecar contra ti” (Salmo 119:11).

NOS CAPACITA PARA DAR EXPRESIÓN A NUESTRA FE

Mucha de la gente que nos rodea, no conoce la palabra de Dios; y en muchas ocasiones usted será la única persona que puede hablarles acerca de Dios, su amor y lo que él desea hacer en la vida del hombre. Usted es responsable de comunicar y transmitir lo que usted cree y ha recibido de Dios a quien necesite escucharlo. Pedro dijo: “Santificad a Dios el Señor en vuestros corazones, y estad siempre preparados para presentar defensa con mansedumbre y reverencia ante todo el que os demande razón de la esperanza que hay en vosotros…” (1 Pedro 3: 15).

La única forma de estar en condiciones de: Contestar al que tiene dudas, callar al que se burla, u orientar al que sinceramente busca la verdad, será estando siempre preparados leyendo y estudiando diariamente la Escritura. Si desea compartir en forma efectiva de Cristo con otros, es indispensable que tenga por lo menos un conocimiento básico de la Palabra de Dios.

NOS GARANTIZA EL ÉXITO

Todos anhelamos tener éxito en el campo de actividad que hemos elegido. La lectura de la Biblia nos enseña como prosperar y como conducirnos para que todo nos salga bien. En la Biblia se nos revela el secreto de Dios para alcanzar el éxito. Por todas las páginas de la Biblia yacen incrustados los más profundos y reveladores consejos de Dios para llegar a la cima del triunfo.

Meditar o reflexionar diariamente en la palabra de Dios nos llevará a descubrir y descifrar los consejos de Dios; y ala vez estos se mantienen siempre frescos en nuestra mente y corazón, garantizándonos el éxito que todos buscamos. “Nunca se aparte de tu boca este libro de la ley, sino que de día y de noche meditarás en él, para que guardes y hagas conforme a todo lo que en él está escrito; porque entonces harás prosperar tu camino, y todo te saldrá bien” (Josué 1: 8). “Bienaventurado el varón que no anduvo en consejo de malos, Ni estuvo en camino de pecadores, Ni en silla de escarnecedores se ha sentado; Sino que en la ley de Jehová está su delicia, Y en ella medita de día y de noche. Será como árbol plantado junto a corrientes de aguas, Que da su fruto en su tiempo, y su hoja no cae; Y todo lo que hace, prosperará” (Salmo 1:1-3).

Esta clase de productividad diaria es el resultado de alimentar la mente todos los días con la palabra de
Dios. Lamentablemente muchos creyentes creen que están demasiado ocupados como para dedicar tiempo a la lectura de la Biblia y refrescar la mente cada día con la Palabra de Dios. Si solo entendieran que un momento de recogimiento con Dios diario, le hará que su día sea más productivo, le rinda más y obtenga mejores resultados.

FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT

“And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger.”  Judges 2:10-12

A generation is that group of people who follow their ancestors or the time of space between the parents and their children.     

This verse connects the generation of the fathers and mothers who brought the children of Israel to the promise land with the generation of their children who lived in the promise land. The generation that arose did not know God and they did not know the works which he had done for Israel. To know God goes beyond hearing about God to experiencing God. It is the kind of knowledge that comes through a walk with God. The next generation’s lack of the knowledge of God and his work is an indictment of their parents. How much we know about God is largely dependent on the foundation received from our parents and how much our children will would know depends on how well we teach them. If our children would carry on our faith, we should invest time in training and exposing them to the things of God. It is a mistake to assume that our children will automatically follow our faith if we do not expose them to the service of God as they grow into adulthood.

DE UNA GENERACIÓN AL SIGUIENTE

“Y toda aquella generación también fue reunida a sus padres. Y se levantó después de ellos otra generación que no conocía a Jehová, ni la obra que él había hecho por Israel. Después los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y sirvieron a los baales. Dejaron a Jehová el Dios de sus padres, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, y se fueron tras otros dioses, los dioses de los pueblos que estaban en sus alrededores, a los cuales adoraron; y provocaron a ira a Jehová.”  Jueces 2:10-12

Una generación es aquel grupo de personas que siguen de sus antepasados o el tiempo de espacio entre los padres y sus hijos.

Este verso une la generación de los padres y madres que trajeron a los hijos de Israel a la tierra prometida con la generación de sus hijos que vivieron en la tierra prometida. La generación que se levantó no conocía de Dios y no conocían las obras que él había hecho por Israel. Conocer a Dios va más allá de oír hablar de Dios a experimentar a Dios. Es el tipo de conocimiento que viene a través de andar con Dios. La carencia de la siguiente generación del conocimiento de Dios y sus obras es una acusación de sus padres. Cuánto sabemos acerca de Dios depende en gran medida de la Fundación recibida de nuestros padres y cuánto sabrán nuestros hijos depende de cuán bien les enseñamos. Si nuestros hijos continuaran nuestra fe, deberíamos invertir el tiempo para instrúyelos y exponiéndolos a las cosas de Dios. Es un error asumir que nuestros hijos seguirán automáticamente nuestra fe si no los exponemos al servicio de Dios a medida que crecen hasta la edad adulta.

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

"Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name.  I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forevermore."  Psalm 86:11-12 NKJV 

These verses remind me of a time when I was chastened by God. Though I had been meeting with the Lord daily in prayer, I had somehow forgotten that I was talking to God. The Lord bluntly said, “You must learn to be respectful in My presence.” That was all it took to make me bury my head in embarrassment. Later that day, as I took a walked, I began to realize again the vastness of God and his creation. I was humbled and awed by the beautiful sky. I felt so incredibly insignificant, yet here the Creator of the universe had spoken to me as a father would to his son. This experience led me to a better understanding of the “Fear of the Lord.”   

The Fear of the Lord is a good kind of fear. It carries a reverential tone and a recognition of how absolutely awesome God is. Such an appreciation caused great men of God like Moses and Joshua to fall on their faces when they went before God. The Fear of the Lord includes a deep appreciation for what Jesus did on the cross for us. It involves recognizing God’s perfection and holiness and confessing our imperfection and lack of holiness. 

The humdrum of daily life can dull our sensitivity to the Fear of the Lord. When we stop fearing God, we will usually take a more casual attitude toward sin. When we start tolerating habitual sins in our lives, we open the door to "double mindedness." This is where we try to follow God with one part of our mind, while following the world with the other part. When we regain a healthy fear for him and reunite our minds in devotion to him, it is then that we can finally praise God with all our hearts.     

EL TEMOR DEL SEÑOR

“Enséñame, oh Jehová, tu camino; caminaré yo en tu verdad; Afirma mi corazón para que tema tu nombre. Te alabaré, oh Jehová Dios mío, con todo mi corazón, Y glorificaré tu nombre para siempre.” Salmos 86:11-12

Estos versos me recuerdan de un tiempo cuando fui amonestado por dios. Aunque yo hubiera estado reuniéndome con el Señor diariamente en la oración, de alguna manera, me había olvidado que estaba hablando con Dios. El Señor sin rodeos me dijo, “Usted debe aprender a ser respetuoso en Mi presencia.” Eso fue todo lo que se necesitó para hacer que enterrar la cabeza en vergüenza. Más tarde ese día, salí a caminar y comencé a realizar nuevamente la inmensidad de Dios y su creación. Fui humillado y asombrado por la hermosura del cielo. Me sentí tan increíblemente insignificante, que el creador del universo me había hablado a mí como un padre a su hijo. Esta experiencia me llevó a un mejor entendimiento del “Temor del Señor.”

El Temor del Señor es una clase buena de temor. Lleva un tono reverencial y es un reconocimiento de como Dios es absolutamente maravilloso. Tal apreciación causó a grandes hombres de Dios como Moisés y Josué a caer en sus rostros cuando iban delante de Dios. El Temor del Señor incluye una apreciación profunda para lo que Jesús hizo en la cruz para nosotros. Se trata de reconocer la perfección y la santidad de Dios y confesando nuestra imperfección y falta de santidad. 

La monotonía de la vida diaria puede embotado nuestra sensibilidad al Temor del Señor. Cuando dejamos de temer a Dios, tomaremos por lo general una actitud más ocasional hacia el pecado. Cuando comenzamos a tolerar pecados habituales en nuestras vidas, abrimos la puerta al "doble animo." Aquí es donde intentamos de seguir a Dios con una parte de nuestra mente, mientras siguiendo el mundo con la otra parte. Cuando recobramos un temor de Él y reunimos nuestras mentes en lealtad a Él, es entonces cuando por fin podemos alabar a Dios con todo nuestro corazon.

DON’T GIVE UP, GET UP, GET GOING!

“Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”… Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”  John 5:1-8

The scene introduced in this part of the chapter is indeed a very pathetic one. The background is the pool of Bethesda (which stands for mercy), around which lied a great multitude of sick people. It is here where Jesus encounters a lame man who has gone through many years of frustration, hardship and disappointment. After thirty-eight years, this man’s problem had become a way of life. He had no hope of ever being healed and no desire to help himself. Desire had reached the vanishing point in his life. He had decided to accept his situation and had given up. He had lost all desire to go on. It is very detrimental when a person loses his desire. Nothing can be accomplished without desire. That is why Jesus started here when he encountered this man. The first thing that he asks the lame man is; “do you want to be healed?” There is no substitute for desire. It’s the difference between winning or losing.  

Now, at first, Jesus’ question seems like such an odd thing to ask: “Do you want to be healed?” What kind of question is that? Why, of course, he wanted to be healed. He’d been coming to the pool of Bethesda all his life. Why else would he have been there?

Yet, when you think about it, thirty-eight years is a long time to wait for a miracle, especially when the conditions were so obviously impossible to meet. From the man’s own admission, he had no hope of reaching the water before the others. You have to wonder why he kept coming back, day after day, year after year. Given the circumstances, he had no reasonable chance of ever being healed. So, in this sense, it was a good question. Do you (really) want to be healed is what Jesus was asking the lame man because, if you do, you’re going about it the wrong way. Unless something gives, it’s not going to happen. There’s a lesson to be learned here: When it comes to being healed physically or otherwise, repetition is not necessarily a virtue.

Bethesda was one of the most attractive clinics of that day. It wasn’t too unpleasant to lie there in the shade while other people outside worked all day long. It was easier to lie down here and do nothing. It’s possible that this man had come to enjoy being sick. Here he enjoyed a measure of comfort.

You have to refuse to accept failure as final. It is said that a professional is an amateur who just never gave up. Don’t give up, get up, get going! You can’t pray successfully with the brakes on! There are some advantages in being just sick enough to get sympathy, attention or your way. Little by little you can get accustom to lying down. You can begin to think that way. You can think small or you can think big.

This man’s condition was aided by self-pity (v.7). Self-pity is a favorite alibi for those who give up. No one wants to help me. I’ve never enjoyed the advantages that others have. I’ve been neglected all my life. The going is just too rough. I’ve tried so many times, etc. Self-pity is destructive. You can’t go around feeling sorry for yourself and get anywhere; “take up your bed and walk” (v.8). You don’t look at difficulty, you look at opportunity. The lame man had to make a choice (v.3). You just can’t wait around. “Do you want to be healed?”

Jesus is asking you today, “Do you want to be healed?” Do you want to experience life in all its abundance? The point is, dare to do things differently. Dare to alter your routine. Break old habits. This can be an important first step toward experiencing a new and more abundant life. And a second step is to venture out of your comfort zone. We often get locked into the mindset that where we are and what we’re doing is a given while, in fact, there are other options, and God often calls us to venture out into new frontiers of life and faith. Nothing in life is more wonderful and powerful than faith, God requires faith.

You have to take up your bed and walk! A little boy was asked, why he fell out of bed. He replied, “I stayed too close to where I got on.” You can’t enjoy God’s victory and carry reserve clauses. Burn the bridges behind you. Don’t make provisions to go back. That why Jesus told the man after he was healed to pick up his bed and take it with him. He was not going to need it, because he was not coming back. Don’t be thinking, “If this doesn’t work, I can always go back and do what I was doing before.

“Do you want to be healed?” Because if you do, you may need to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith and venture out into the unknown. If you’re determined to hold on to what you have, you may well be closing the door to the possibilities God has in store for you. In the final analysis, it’s a question only you can answer.

NO SÉ DE POR VENCIDO, LEVÁNTESE, MUÉVASE

“Y había allí un hombre que hacía treinta y ocho años que estaba enfermo. Cuando Jesús lo vio acostado, y supo que llevaba ya mucho tiempo así, le dijo: ¿Quieres ser sano?... Jesús le dijo: Levántate, toma tu lecho, y anda.” Juan 5:1-8

La escena introducida en esta parte del capítulo es en efecto uno muy patético. El fondo es el estanque de Betesda (que significa misericordia), alrededor del cual había una gran multitud de personas enfermas. Es aquí donde Jesús encuentra un hombre cojo que ha pasado por muchos años de frustración, miseria y desilusión. Después de treinta y ocho años, el problema de este hombre se había hecho un estilo de vida. Él no tenía ninguna esperanza de ser sanado y ningún deseo de ayudarse a sí mismo. El deseo había llegado al punto de desaparecerse en su vida. Él había decidido aceptar su situación y se había rendido. Él había perdido todo el deseo de continuar. Es muy perjudicial cuando una persona pierde su deseo. Nada puede ser logrado sin deseo. Por eso Jesús comenzó aquí cuando se encontró con este hombre. La primera cosa que le pregunta al hombre cojo es; “¿Quieres ser sano?” No hay ningún sustituto para el deseo. Esto es la diferencia entre ganar o perder.

Ahora, en primer lugar, la pregunta de Jesús parece una cosa tan rara de preguntar: ¿Quiere ser sano? ¿Qué tipo de pregunta es esto? Por supuesto, él quería ser sanado. Él había estado viniendo al estanque de Betesda toda su vida. ¿Por qué más habría estado él allí?

Aún, cuando usted piensa en ello, treinta y ocho años es mucho tiempo para esperar un milagro, especialmente cuando las condiciones eran tan obviamente imposibles satisfacer. De la propia admisión del hombre, él no tenía ninguna esperanza de alcanzar el agua antes de los demás. Usted tiene que preguntarse por qué él siguió volviendo, día tras día, año tras año. Considerando las circunstancias, él no tenía ninguna posibilidad razonable de jamás ser sanado. Así, en este sentido, es una buena pregunta. Realmente desea ser sanado es lo que Jesús estaba preguntándole al hombre cojo, porque, si en verdad quieres, la manera en que los está siendo es incorrecto. A menos que algo suceda, esto no va a pasar. Hay una lección para ser aprendida aquí: cuando se trata de ser sanado físicamente o por otra parte, la repetición no es necesariamente una virtud.

Betesda era una de las clínicas más atractivas de aquel día. No era demasiado desagradable estar allí en la sombra mientras otras personas afuera trabajaban todo el día. Era más fácil estar aquí acostado y no hacer nada. Es posible que este hombre había llegado a gustarle estar enfermo. Aquí él disfrutaba de una medida de comodidad.

Usted tiene que rechazar aceptar el fracaso como el final. Se dice que un profesional es un aficionado que simplemente no se dio por vencido. ¡No sé de por vencido, levántese, muévase! ¡Usted no puede orar con éxito con los frenos puestos! Hay algunas ventajas en estar lo suficientemente enfermo para conseguir simpatía, la atención o su manera. Poco a poco usted puede acostumbrarse a estar acostado. Puede empezar a pensar de esa manera. Usted puede pensar pequeño o puede pensar grande.

La condición de este hombre fue ayudada por autocompasión (v.7). La autocompasión es uno de las favoritas coartadas para quienes se dan por vencidos. Nadie quiere ayudarme. Nunca he disfrutado de las ventajas que los otros tienen. Me ha sentido abandonado toda mi vida. La vida es demasiada difícil. He intentado tantas veces, etc. La autocompasión es destructiva. Usted no puede vivir teniéndose lastima y esperar lograr algo; “toma tu lecho y anda” (v.8). No mire la dificultad, mira la oportunidad. El hombre cojo tuvo que hacer una elección (v.3).

Cristo le está preguntando hoy, “¿Quiere ser sana?” ¿Quiere experimentar la vida en toda su abundancia? El punto es, atrévase a hacer las cosas de una manera diferente. Atrévase cambiar su rutina. Rompa viejos hábitos. Este puede ser un primer paso importante hacia la experimentación de una vida nueva y más abundante. Y un segundo paso es aventurarse fuera de su zona de comodidad. A menudo somos encerrados en la mentalidad que donde estamos y lo que estamos haciendo es un determinado, mientras, de hecho hay otras opciones y Dios a menudo nos llama para aventurarnos a nuevas fronteras de vida y fe. Nada en la vida es más maravilloso y poderoso que la fe, Dios requiere la fe.

¡Usted tiene que tomar su lecho y andar! le preguntaron a un pequeño, por qué se había caído de la cama. Él contestó, “me quedé muy cercas de donde subí.” Usted no puede disfrutar de la victoria de Dios y cargar cláusulas de reserva. Queme los puentes detrás de usted. No haga provisiones para volver. Por eso Jesús le dijo al hombre después de que él fue sanado que levantara su cama y que se la llevara con él. Él no la iba a necesitar, porque él no iba a volver. No esté pensando, “Si este no trabaja, yo siempre puedo volver y hacer lo que yo hacía antes.

¿Quiere ser sano? Porque si es hace, usted va tener que salir de su zona de comodidad y tomar un salto de fe y arriesgarse a lo desconocido. Si usted está determinado retener lo que tiene, usted puede cerrar la puerta a las posibilidades que Dios tiene para usted. En el análisis final, esto es una pregunta que sólo usted puede contestar.

WHY PRAY IF GOD DOES NOT ANSWER?

“For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”  Romans 8:24-28

Throughout the scriptures we are told to pray. Moreover, God has promised to answer prayer “for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Can there be any doubt that God answers prayer?

Those of us that have prayed know there are many times when there is no answer to our pleadings. Why? In some cases it may be disobedience (Deuteronomy 1:45; I Samuel 14:37, 28:6), secret sin (Psalms 66:18); Indifference, neglect of mercy (Proverbs 21:13); iniquity (Isaiah 59:2; Micah 3:4), stubbornness (Zechariah 7:13); instability (James 1:6-7) or self-indulgence (James 4:3).

But, what if we are living as best we can and praying for someone else, not in a selfish way of praying? Why does He not hear us when we fast and pray? On the one hand God promises to answer our prayers, and yet we pray and pray, and there is no answer. Why? There must be something we are missing. James 4:3 tells us why some prayers are not answered. What are some of these reasons? In II Corinthians 12:7, we are told that God did not answer Paul’s prayers. In Daniel 10:12-13 and II Corinthians 10:4-5 we see other reasons why prayers are not answered.

What if God intends prayer to be more than just getting what we want or what we think is best? What if God has a far greater purpose than what we are asking to be done? How does the sovereignty of God affect our praying? Why did Jesus pray, “Nevertheless, not my will but thine be done”? Why do we not pray in the same manner?

Romans 8:28: “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Can we believe this, even when God does not answer our prayers? Do you have an instance of this? Is it possible that one day in eternity we will see that God answered many of our prayers, in a different way and in a later time?

If we pray and do not get answers, what should we do? What do we usually do? What does this say about our understanding of God and His purpose? Is it possible that God intends to use prayer to change us (our thinking, our outlook, our priorities, and our way of life) instead of giving us something?

¿POR QUÉ ORAR SI DIOS NO CONTESTA?

“Porque en esperanza fuimos salvos; pero la esperanza que se ve, no es esperanza; porque lo que alguno ve, ¿a qué esperarlo? Pero si esperamos lo que no vemos, con paciencia lo aguardamos. Y de igual manera el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad; pues qué hemos de pedir como conviene, no lo sabemos, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles. Mas el que escudriña los corazones sabe cuál es la intención del Espíritu, porque conforme a la voluntad de Dios intercede por los santos.”  Romanos 8:24-28

A través de las escrituras se nos dice que debemos orar. Además, Dios ha prometido contestar la oración; “porque es necesario que el que se acerca a Dios crea que le hay, y que es galardonador de los que le buscan.” (Hebreos 11:6). ¿Puede haber alguna duda que Dios contesta la oración?

Aquellos de nosotros que hemos orado sabemos que hay muchas ocasiones cuando no hay ninguna respuesta a nuestras súplicas. ¿Por qué? En algunos casos esto puede ser la desobediencia (Deuteronomio 1:45; I Samuel 14:37, 28:6), pecado secreto (Salmos 66:18); indiferencia o el descuido de la misericordia (Proverbios 21:13); iniquidad (Isaías 59:2; Miqueas 3:4), obstinación (Zacarías 7:13); inestabilidad (Santiago 1:6-7) o auto indulgencia (Santiago 4:3).

Pero, ¿qué si estamos viviendo lo mejor que podemos y orando por alguien más, no de una manera egoísta de orar? ¿Por qué no nos oye Dios cuándo ayunamos y oramos? Por una parte Dios promete contestar nuestras oraciones, y aún oramos y oramos, y no hay ninguna respuesta. ¿Por qué? Debe haber algo que nos falta. Santiago 4:3 nos dice por qué algunas oraciones no son contestadas. ¿Cuáles son algunos de estos motivos? II Corintios 12:7, nos dice que Dios no contestó las oraciones de Pablo. En Daniel 10:12-13 y II Corintios 10:4-5 vemos otros motivos por qué las oraciones no son contestadas.

¿Qué, si Dios tiene la intención que la oración sea más que conseguir sólo lo qué queremos o lo qué pensamos que es lo mejor? ¿Qué, si Dios tiene un propósito mucho más grande que lo que estamos pidiendo que sea hecho? ¿Cómo afecta la soberanía de Dios nuestro orar? ¿Por qué oro Jesús, “pero no se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya”? ¿Por qué no oramos en la misma manera?

Romanos 8:28: "Y sabemos que a los que aman a Dios, todas las cosas les ayudan a bien, esto es, a los que conforme a su propósito son llamados." ¿Podemos creer esto, aun cuando Dios no contesta nuestras oraciones? ¿Tiene usted un caso de esto? ¿Es posible que un día en la eternidad veamos que Dios contestó muchas de nuestras oraciones, de una manera diferente y en un tiempo posterior?

¿Si oramos y no conseguimos respuestas, qué deberíamos hacer? ¿Qué hacemos por lo general? ¿Qué dice este sobre nuestra comprensión de Dios y Su propósito? ¿Es posible que Dios tenga la intención de usar la oración para cambiarnos (nuestra mentalidad, nuestra perspectiva, nuestras prioridades, y nuestro forma de vivir) en vez de darnos algo?

BELIEVING THE PROMISES

"Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.   With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation." Psalm 91:14-16

 

There are some great benefits to loving God. Psalm 91 details some of God’s promises to those who love him. God promises that if we love him, he will rescue us, protect us, answer our prayers, be with us in trouble, deliver us and honor us, give us a satisfying long life and show us his salvation. 

We can stand in faith on these promises and face any struggle in life that comes our way. The faith part is sometimes very difficult because the circumstances may not confirm that God’s promises are in action. Persisting in belief that God will honor his promises is the secret to being transformed into the new person Christ has made us to be. Such faith can actually bring the physical manifestation of the promises into existence. 

The Apostle Paul wrote about how Abraham’s faith brought about his transformation into the father of many nations in Romans 4:16-22: “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." Notice how Abraham faced impossible circumstances, yet continued to believe God’s promise to him. The scripture also mentions that God strengthened Abraham’s faith along the way. 

You may be facing seemingly impossible circumstances in your own life. If you are struggling in your life, you can start claiming God’s promises for rescue, restoration and protection, just as Abraham believed God. The Word of God tells us in Matthew 19:26 that all things are possible with God. Just as God fulfilled his promises to Abraham, he will fulfill his promises to you.  

CREYENDO EN LAS PROMESAS

“Por cuanto en mí ha puesto su amor, yo también lo libraré; Le pondré en alto, por cuanto ha conocido mi nombre. Me invocará, y yo le responderé; Con él estaré yo en la angustia; Lo libraré y le glorificaré. Lo saciaré de larga vida, Y le mostraré mi salvación.” Salmos 91:14-16

Hay algunos grandes beneficios al amar a Dios. El Salmo 91 detalla algunas de las promesas de Dios a los que le aman. Dios promete que si lo amamos, él nos librara, nos protegerá; contestará nuestras oraciones, estará con nosotros en la angustia; nos librara y nos glorificara, nos saciara de larga vida; y nos mostrará su salvación.

Podemos permanecer en fe en estas promesas y enfrentar cualquier lucha en la vida que se nos presentan. La parte de la fe es a veces es muy difícil porque las circunstancias no pueden confirmar que las promesas de Dios están en acción. La persistencia en la creencia que Dios honrará sus promesas es el secreto para ser transformada en la nueva persona que Cristo nos ha hecho. Tal fe realmente puede traer la manifestación física de las promesas a la existencia.

El Apóstol Pablo escribió acerca de como la fe de Abraham causó su transformación en el padre de muchas naciones en Romanos 4:16-22: “El creyó en esperanza contra esperanza, para llegar a ser padre de muchas gentes, conforme a lo que se le había dicho: Así será tu descendencia. Y no se debilitó en la fe al considerar su cuerpo, que estaba ya como muerto (siendo de casi cien años), o la esterilidad de la matriz de Sara. Tampoco dudó, por incredulidad, de la promesa de Dios, sino que se fortaleció en fe, dando gloria a Dios, plenamente convencido de que era también poderoso para hacer todo lo que había prometido; por lo cual también su fe le fue contada por justicia.” Note como Abraham afrontado circunstancias imposibles, aún siguió creyendo la promesa de Dios a él. La escritura también menciona que Dios reforzó la fe de Abraham a lo largo del camino.

Usted puede estar enfrentando circunstancias aparentemente imposible en su propia vida. Si usted está luchando en su vida, usted puede empezar a reclamar las promesas de Dios para liberación, restauración y protección, como Abraham creyó a Dios. La Palabra de Dios nos dice en Mateo 19:26; que todas las cosas son posibles con Dios. Como Dios realizó sus promesas con Abraham, Él cumplirá sus promesas a usted.

KILLING THE OLD SELF

“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.” (Colossians 3:5-10)

When we were saved our “old self” was buried in baptism, and God resurrected us to live in newness of life; “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). This newness of life is exponentially better than life in our old sinful habits. Yet many fail to experience the new life Jesus bought for us. They find that their old ways are easy to fall back into, and their newness of life seems to be choked out by their old self. Their saved, yet settle for “worldly Christianity,” which makes it hard to distinguish our lives from those of the world.

God didn’t intend for us to live this way. Living a transformed life is possible and you can become like Jesus. The newness of life starts with killing the old self, repeatedly and faithfully. You don’t have to fight this battle on your own. God, in his wonderful grace, promised to help you through His Spirit; “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you… For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:11, 13). He won’t do it for you, but He will join you when you step out in obedience. 

There are many actions you can take to kill the old self and put on the new self. Ask God for help and strength to make the right choices. Surrender and commit yourself to Him daily, Arm yourself with the truth from the Word of God to help you discern sin’s lies.

Set your mind on heavenly things; “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:1-4). When we are able to force our mind off the carnal things and on to Jesus Christ, we starve the old self of the evil thoughts it needs to revive. Heavenly thoughts keep the old self in the grave. 

These skills will take time to master. You may stumble as you practice them, but if you keep getting back up faithfully, you will have victory! Remember that God’s mercies are new every morning; “Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23). The light of Christ’s love will begin to shine brighter and brighter through you to those around you as you put the old self to death. You’ll begin to experience the riches of the new life in Jesus. 

MATANDO AL HOMBRE VIEJO

“Haced morir, pues, lo terrenal en vosotros: fornicación, impureza, pasiones desordenadas, malos deseos y avaricia, que es idolatría; cosas por las cuales la ira de Dios viene sobre los hijos de desobediencia, en las cuales vosotros también anduvisteis en otro tiempo cuando vivíais en ellas. Pero ahora dejad también vosotros todas estas cosas: ira, enojo, malicia, blasfemia, palabras deshonestas de vuestra boca. No mintáis los unos a los otros, habiéndoos despojado del viejo hombre con sus hechos, y revestido del nuevo, el cual conforme a la imagen del que lo creó se va renovando hasta el conocimiento pleno.” (Colosenses 3:5-10)

Cuando fuimos salvos nuestro “hombre viejo” fue sepultado en el bautismo, y Dios nos resucitó para andar en vida nueva; “Porque somos sepultados juntamente con él para muerte por el bautismo, a fin de que como Cristo resucitó de los muertos por la gloria del Padre, así también nosotros andemos en vida nueva” (Romanos 6:4). Esta novedad de vida es exponencialmente mejor que la vida en nuestros viejos hábitos pecaminosos. Sin embargo, muchos no experimentan la nueva vida que Jesús compró para nosotros. Ellos descubren que es fácil volver a caer en sus viejas costumbres, y su novedad de vida parece estar constreñida por el viejo hombre. Son salvos, aún se conforman con un “cristianismo mundano,” que lo hace difícil distinguir sus vidas de aquellos del mundo.

No era la intención de Dios que viviéramos de esa  manera. Viviendo una vida transformada es posible y usted puede llegar a ser como Cristo. La novedad de vida comienza con la muerte del viejo hombre, repetidamente y fielmente. Usted no tiene que pelear esta batalla solo. Dios, en su maravillosa gracia, prometió ayudarle por medio de Su Espíritu; “Y si el Espíritu de aquel que levantó de los muertos a Jesús mora en vosotros, el que levantó de los muertos a Cristo Jesús vivificará también vuestros cuerpos mortales por su Espíritu que mora en vosotros… porque si vivís conforme a la carne, moriréis; mas si por el Espíritu hacéis morir las obras de la carne, viviréis” (Romanos 8:11,13). Él no lo hará para usted, pero Él le acompañará cuando usted toma un paso de obediencia.

Hay muchas acciones que usted puede realizar para matar al hombre viejo y revestirse del hombre nuevo. Pida a Dios la ayuda y la fuerza para hacer las decisiones correctas. Ríndase y comprométase a Él diariamente, Ármate con la verdad de la Palabra de Dios para ayudarle a discernir las mentiras del pecado.

Concentre su mente en cosas celestiales; “Si, pues, habéis resucitado con Cristo, buscad las cosas de arriba, donde está Cristo sentado a la diestra de Dios. Poned la mira en las cosas de arriba, no en las de la tierra. Porque habéis muerto, y vuestra vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios. Cuando Cristo, vuestra vida, se manifieste, entonces vosotros también seréis manifestados con él en gloria” (Colosenses 3:1-4). Cuando somos capaces de forzar nuestras mentes de las cosas carnales y concentrar en Jesucristo, privamos de comida al viejo hombre de los malos pensamientos que necesita para revivir. BEING QUIET BEFORE GOD

“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him.” Psalm 3:7

Daily devotion with God is essential to spiritual growth and maintaining an intimate relationship with Him. When we worship or pray we fill up that time with words. We have to be quiet and listen for the voice of God. We live in a world that is too busy and loud. It is difficult to think for all the interruptions.

Our daily transformation will hinge upon a daily devotion time with God. This is often referred to as a "Quiet time." The quiet time helps us get connected with God. If we want to walk daily with Him, we will have to be having regular quiet times. Being quiet before the Lord is a part of prayer that is often overlooked.

Why is it so hard for us to be quiet before the Lord? Because we can’t sit still long enough to allow God the time to speak. We have our quick five minute prayer and off we go, on to the next thing. We don’t have time to be quiet and listen to God. We’re reluctant to be quiet because it’s a foreign concept to us. It’s not what we’re used to. We’re used to noise we’ve become accustomed to chaos.

We resist giving God the opportunity to speak. But, why? Have you ever been around someone who likes to do all the talking? People do this either as a diversion tactic or a control method. When they can control the conversation, they can avoid any difficult questions from being asked or they can avert a situation where they will be challenged. Is that how we are with God? Maybe we want to do all the talking because if we allow God to speak then we will have to deal with what He reveals.

You can find many websites that provide daily nuggets of spiritual truth and encouragement, but in addition to these, you can also develop your own quiet time with God. Often times Christians are unsure of how to incorporate daily devotion into their life. The following are some suggestions to creating an effective quiet time with God, thus enhancing your daily devotional time with Him.

Make space for God, James 4:8 declares, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." Your desire in wanting a daily devotional time with God is the first step in making space for God. Too often we can be pre-occupied with the necessities and urgencies of life and neglect to spend quality time with God. Going to church is good, but it cannot replace the one-on-one time in fellowship with Jesus. In making space for God, you make time for just you and God. Whether it is in the morning or evening, you make an effort to spend quiet time with Him as often as possible. Jesus said that we will find Him when we seek Him with all of our hearts.

Prepare your heart. Have you ever went into a meeting or were talking with a friend but your thoughts were somewhere else? You were there in body, but your mind could have been on another planet. This can happen during your daily devotions with God as well. You enter your pray room all ready to fellowship with God, but instead you think about all the activities you need to complete during the coming day. Preparing your heart before God means clearing your heart and mind of everything that interferes with you giving your full attention to Him. Jesus said that when we "seek first the kingdom of God" everything we need will be added unto us. Therefore, giving our full attention to God is really an insurance policy that all things will work out for our good.

Quieting our heart before God is necessary because it is in such a calm and restful state that the life of faith can strike deep roots, that God can give His blessed teaching and accomplish His glorious purposes. Too often our restless mind and thoughts get in the way of hearing the voice of the Spirit. It is a soul silent before God that is the best preparation for knowing Jesus, and for holding fast the blessings He gives. It is when the soul is silent in worship before His presence that the voice of the Spirit will be heard.

Meditating on the Lord is a good way to quiet our mind and soul. For many Christians, red flags go up when they hear the word meditation, however, meditating on God just means shutting out all other thoughts, ideas, worries, and concerns so that your full attention is on Christ. Joshua 1:8 tells us to meditate on God day and night so that we will have good success in life. There are also many ways to meditate on God. Some believers meditate on the word of God allowing a word or phrase to penetrate their heart. Others just enjoy abiding in God's presence and letting go of all mental distractions that come to take their attention away from God. The Bible says "in God's presence is fullness of joy."

Spiritual journaling is another practice that will enhance your daily devotions. Journaling comes in many forms, but basically it is God's love letters to you and your love letters to God. Through journaling you can record your inspirations and messages that God gives to you during your devotional time or throughout the day. It also allows you to share your heart with God and give your troubles and worries to Him in a tangible way. It is in essence your written spiritual journey with God.
